I was on the Board of Directors for Family Shelter Service, a charity dedicated to create a community that is free of domestic violence and safe for all, for 2004-2005.  Click here for a listing.

Family Shelter Service is committed to serving those affected by domestic violence by providing a network of dynamic, interconnected programs and by empowering individuals and families to realize their potential.

Among other things, Family Shelter Service provides counseling, support groups, shelter, and advocacy for victims of domestic violence.

- each year, approximately 2 million women are severly assaulted by male partners.
- each year, an estimated 3.3 million children witness domestic abuse.
- each year, 40% of teenage girls ages 14-17 report knowing someone their age who has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend.

Family Shelter Service plays a significant role in the development and implementation of the DuPage County Domestic Violence Protocol, which provides the structure for the community's response to domestic violence.  All police departments in DuPage county give Family Shelter Service contact information when they go to a domestic abuse call.
